The submariner snare drum is a rolled and rivetted 904L steel shell (1.5mm thick). 904L is a very high grade of steel that is also used to make Rolex watches. The drum also features VKast cast aluminum hoops. The tone is much brighter and has more "ping" than a standard steel shell. Similar brightness to a cast bronze shell, but much less thick.
